Receiving my first email with the introduction: “Hello Ms. Petersen” really made the idea of being an English teacher feel so real! I was so excited and anxious to have my first class on Wednesday and I am very pleased with how it went and am even looking more forward to what the semester will hold!
I was originally told by the English Department at the university that there would be a maximum of 17 students in the class. My university here does not have any sort of online class sign up so students receive a list of the classes being offered the week they start and choose which ones they want to attend. That being said, I had 29 students show up to pack one very small classroom. I had only made 25 copies of everything but assured them I would work the department and other professors to figure out the class arrangements so they could get the most out of their experience. Two days later, and all the wrinkles are ironed out! I now have a sound class roster of 19 Polish masters students.
During the Conversational English course, we will be covering one topic each week and the students are in charge of: presenting and leading a class discussion on one theme; completing a mid-semester evaluation; and maintaining regular attendance and participation.
The semester’s topic list, provided by the department, is as follows:
1) Urban life 2) Home 3) Money 4) The Media 5) Relationships 6) Population issues 7) Internet issues 8) War and peace 9) Art 10) Selected cultural issues in English-speaking countries 11) The Future
Next week’s focus will be on “Relationships” which is quite befitting for Valentine’s Day:)
My mother, herself a teacher and professor, has instilled in me that the purpose of education is to build intelligence and character. I am passionate about enhancing my own academic, professional, and personal endurance while also sharing this commitment. I hope to instill those same values of humanitarianism and discovery that the Fulbright Program has, and continues, to instill in me. I truly hope I can foster a conducive learning environment where my students are able to not only improve their English discourse skills, but also learn more about who they are as motivated young individuals and leaders!
Excited for what is to come!

Skype me in. I want to guest lecture on media :)
Have a great time!
That is such a great idea! We don’t have internet connection in the rooms…but we do have spotty internet connection in the hallways. We may just have to get creative! I would love to have you as a guest lecturer! I’ll let you know which date the topic will be presented : )
Interesting how the school is technically behind. I know you’re up for the challenges.
